I've heard of chlorine before, but I'm still not really sure what pH is. PDF Print E-mail

A. "pH" refers to the acid/base level of your pool water. The reason it’s important is that unless your pool is within a certain pH range, your chlorine can’t chemically interact with the bacteria and algae it’s supposed to kill. The proper range is 7.2-7.6. When the pH is high, the water becomes cloudy, the sanitizer works less efficiently, algae & bacteria grow more quickly, and scale can begin forming on metal surfaces. Low pH causes very clear, but unhealthy water in that the sanitizer is used up quickly, the water becomes corrosive, and eye & skin irritations are noticed.
